Carl Edwards' Finishes

Carl Edwards’ Finishes

Edwards 4In his first season at Joe Gibbs Racing, Carl Edwards was the 2nd best driver. I would even go as far to say that Edwards was the most improved driver over the course of the season of every driver in the Sprint Cup Series. As the (line) graph above shows us, it took half way into the season for Edwards to really find something to make the entire team click. The first 17 races of the season produced 1 victory and an average finish of 20.76 with finishes all over the place from 1st to 42nd; starting at race 18, there was another victory but the average finish improved to a 7.89, and no finish worst than 15th. Whatever the 19 team did to make that happen, hopefully it will continue on into 2016. With a new crew chief, that bit remains unknown, but what we do know is that Edwards has adapted to being at Joe Gibbs Racing and that entire team is incredibly strong. With how well Edwards performed in the 2nd half of the season, it is no surprise that he made it as far as he did in the Chase, but he should have gone further if rain did not come at Phoenix in November. Both of Edwards’ victories came on Intermediate tracks, but 2 very different intermediate tracks. Edwards’ average finish on Intermediate tracks was 6th best and being 1 of only 7 drivers to average a top 10 finish on all Intermediate tracks is something to be very proud of. His average finish during the regular season was 16.15, and entering the Chase, he was at his season’s best.

Edwards 1

Entering the Challenger Round, Edwards had a solid showing, averaging a 7.33 finish, which was 4th best of the Chasers. Edwards did not make a lot of noise or bring attention to himself, but he was there when it counted and kept chugging along. Sometimes flying under the radar can keep the field off your tail just enough for you to beat them every week. During the Contender Round, he had the 2nd best average finish of 6.33, finishing in the top 10 all 3 races. Consistency like that is vital to keeping Chase hopes alive in this format, and he did an impeccable job. Moving along to the Eliminator Round, Edwards racked up all top 15 finishes, with an average finish of 10.33, his worst average Chase round finish thus far but not bad by any means. However, 4 drivers averaged better than he did and the quiet, consistent driver was eliminated from the Chase. He did what he needed to during the Chase, finish consistently the entire time and had no mistakes; he was just bested slightly by a few other drivers. His Chase average finish was 8.3, which was 2nd best overall. Who knows what Edwards could have done at Phoenix if the race went the entire way, but 2016 could be a great year for Edwards if this momentum keeps up. While the ending was not what he was hoping for, which for every driver is lifting the Championship trophy in Homestead, Edwards was very proud of all his team accomplished this year, and he should be!

Carl Edwards was one of the most consistent drivers during the season, especially during the Chase. There is no doubt in my mind that Edwards is a strong driver and can adapt rather quickly to change. Now that he has found his footing with his new team, hopefully Darian Grubb and Edwards will click right off the back and he can pick up where he left off this season. 2016 should be a very good year for Edwards and I expect to see him up front more and being just as strong in the Chase. Congratulations Carl Edwards on a very successful first season at Joe Gibbs Racing and best of luck in 2016!
