Jamie McMurray’s Finishes

McMurray 5Jamie McMurray, one of NASCAR’s quietest and most underrated drivers in my (statistical) opinion, and I shall show you why. Even though this is the first year McMurray has made the Chase, I can assure you it was no fluke and it will not be the last time we see this driver make an appearance. I also expect his teammate, Kyle Larson, to join him very soon and both be competitive. While his season may have started off slowly, he quickly got into a groove and earned his best finish of the season during the 4th race of the season at Phoenix International Raceway. From there, McMurray continued to rack up solid finishes in the top 15 and the top 10, including back to back to back 7th place finishes. During the regular season, McMurray was able to 2 top 5, 7 top 10, and 18 top 15 finishes, with an average finish of 15, and earning himself a spot in the Chase (and rightfully so!). Heading into the Chase, McMurray was ready to make noise and be seen as a contender, and he did just that! Each week that went back, he just got better and better. Entering Dover, it was a tight battle for the last spot in the Contender Round and sadly, McMurray barely lost out to Dale Earnhardt Jr. for that last spot (despite an average finish of 11.33), but the smile never left McMurray’s face. You could tell how excited he was to have such a great run in the Chase and even though his championship hopes were gone, he did not let off the gas. Mcmurray earned 5 more top 15 finishes, including another 2nd place finish, this time at Martinsville (where he barely lost out to Jeff Gordon). His Chase overall average finish was 14.63, which was slightly better than his regular season average.

It should be no surprise that McMurray’s best finish this season (2nd) came at short tracks. When it comes to finding his way around the tight tracks, McMurray is oneof the best! McMurray had the 2nd best short track program; 2 seems to be a good number for McMurray on short tracks, though I think he would like a 1 in there. While his short track qualifying is only 11th best, it is clear that McMurray knows his way around the short tracks and can battle to the front and contend. Could McMurray make the Chase again next year, but not on points (alone) but on victories? I see that being a very strong possibility! I sense great things for this team, especially when we get to those short tracks.

What can we say about McMurray? Well, how about props to a FANTASTIC season that is sure to be a glimmer of what we will see next year, perhaps with a victory or two? Give it up to Jamie McMurray for a very respectable 2015 season and cheers to more great things in 2016!
