On Monday evening, a rumor regarding Homestead-Miami Speedway caught many NASCAR fans off guard.

A popular NASCAR YouTube commentator, in a recently deleted tweeted, chimed in by saying, “RIP Homestead Miami Speedway.” Immediately, NASCAR Twitter broke into chaos.

Almost every reply to this thread resulted in a question that essentially asked, “What does that mean?”

The explanation came a few minutes later stating that supposedly the track was closing and sold for housing land.

With no immediate confirmation or denial from the speedway itself, NASCAR Twitter went into panic mode. However, Steve Losner, Mayor of Homestead, released a statement regarding the rumor.

“Just a few minutes ago, I was alerted to a rumor running wild on Twitter and throughout NASCAR fan sites to the effect that the Homestead Miami Speedway is going to be demolished for the land ‘to be converted to residential use; this is what the new mayor wants.’

Where and why this false and unfounded lie was hatched is not hard to decipher. Why would your mayor be accused of wanting to chase racing from Homestead? Think about the controversial items about to come before your City Council that I do not support.

The City of Homestead and the operators of the speedway have a long history of cooperation and mutual respect.  The facility is under a long-term lease with many years remaining.”

Reactions

Following Mayor Losner’s response, YouTube personality Eric Estepp tweeted, “Took a 3 hour nap and missed a bunch of people irresponsibly spreading Homestead Miami Speedway rumors apparently. Must’ve really been wild to get the damn mayor to respond.”

As host of NASCAR’s Ford Championship Weekend from 2002 thru 2019, Homestead-Miami Speedway played host to many memorable title fights. With the rumor dismissed, fans can look ahead with excitement to NASCAR’s return to Miami next week.

Kicking off the weekend will be the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series “Diabetes Can Break Your Heart 200” on Friday, March 20th. Afterwards, the NASCAR Xfinity Series takes to the track with the 2020 Census.gov 300 on Saturday, March 21st. Finally, the Cup Series field competes in the Dixie Vodka 400 on Sunday, March 22nd.

Certainly, Homestead-Miami will celebrate their 25th anniversary this year. Above all, this track and its owners don’t plan on going anywhere any time soon.

I was first introduced to motorsports when I was around 14, and spent almost every weekend at our local dragstrip with my brother and his friends. Most of them owned Mustangs of all different body styles, with a few Camaros and Trans Ams here and there. We started a local mustang group known as "Brevard Mustangs", where we had meet ups, car shows, went to events and races together, and helped each other with the latest car builds. I have had my fair share of Mustangs myself, starting with a 99 35th Anniversary GT, then an 03 Cobra, and ultimately an 04 S281 Saleen that I named Gigi.
