NORTH DINWIDDIE, Va. — The Top Fuel dragsters started off final eliminations with a bang during the PlayNHRA Virginia Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Finals Round 1

Josh Hart and Dan Mercier were the first two to go down the track together. Although Mericer had the better elapsed time, Hart won on a hole shot due to his better speed and reaction time.

Dan Mercier .097 .906 2.255 3.195 269.83 3.981 308.85
Josh Hart .046 .907 2.268 3.214 271.95 3.982 317.12

Antron Brown and Billy Torrence were up next. Torrence ended up spinning his tires and slipped, fading and handing the win to Brown, even though he started off the line quicker.

RT ET MPH
Antron Brown .064 3.913 318.32
Billy Torrence .041 4.121 274.44

Number one qualifier, Shawn Langdon, met his dancing partner, Lex Joon, after that. Langdon had the better run overall and continued his streak of going number one by advancing to the next round.

Lex Joon .113 .946 2.352 3.324 260.66 4.154 275.73
Shawn Langdon .081 .874 2.205 3.137 272.39 3.911 313.88

Doug Kalitta had a solo round after that, where he clocked a reaction time of .081, and elapsed time of 3.940 seconds and a final speed of 318.84.

Next, Clay Millican and Tony Stewart were up. Stewart was the victor of the round with the higher elapsed time and final speed. Stewart also managed to get the lowest elapsed time of the round thus far.

RT ET MPH
Tony Stewart .114 3.874 319.07
Clay Millican .026 4.109 254.18

Shawn Reed and Tony Schumacher went head-to-head after. Reed started quicker than Schumacher, but Reeds’ tires hazed over, causing him to slow down pretty noticeably. Schumacher lost himself a cylinder as well, but managed to hold it together enough to get the round win and advance on.

RT ET MPH
Shawn Reed .069 4.490 221.34
Tony Schumacher .084 4.095 246.66

The next round was an all-female lineup with Brittany Force and Jasmine Salinas. They were side-by-side for a little bit, but Salinas’s engine backfired and this caused her to not meet the speeds required to beat Ms. Force.

RT ET MPH
Jasmine Salinas .090 4.653 178.47
Brittany Force .066 3.920 321.27

And last but not least, the final matchup of the first round of eliminations was between Justin Ashley and Steve Torrence. Ashley had a cylinder misfire, and this caused him to not have enough horsepower to compete with Torrence. But Torrence was not in the clear either because his engine expired almost as soon as he ejected his parachutes. Torrence was able to make it ahead of Ashley though to advance to the next round.

Justin Ashley .042 .894 2.292 3.330 216.38 4.499 187.65

Finals Round 2

Kalitta and Hart were up first to kick off the second out of final eliminations for the Top Fuel dragsters. Although Hart fired quicker off the line, Kalitta took home the win by having a better elapsed time and final speed that got him to the semifinals.

Josh Hart .050 .895 2.293 3.344 221.16 4.490 191.57
Doug Kalitta .086 .874 2.229 3.183 267.69 3.964 311.56

RT ET MPH
Antron Brown .064 3.923 316.38
Tony Schumacher .060 4.284 212.93

After that were Langdon and Torrence. Torrence had the better elapsed time and final speed in the extremely close race between him and Langdon, but Langdon had the better reaction time, and that earned him the win and an advancement to the semifinals.

Steve Torrence .086 .891 2.265 3.207 273.27 3.971 319.67
Shawn Langdon .078 .873 2.226 3.187 265.80 3.976 307.65

Finally, the last two drivers out to conclude the second round of final eliminations were none other than Force and Stewart. In another close race, Stewart managed to edge out Force by getting to the finish line quicker. Force did have the quicker reaction time and final speed, though.

RT ET MPH
Tony Stewart .087 3.907 314.53
Brittany Force .086 3.931 319.82

Semifinals

The first of two matches was between Brown and Langdon. In an insanely close race, Langdon managed to hit all three marks ahead of the veteran champion to advance to the final round.

Shawn Langdon .058 .846 2.160 3.068 281.60 3.815 326.40
Antron Brown .088 .861 2.168 3.073 281.07 3.826 323.35

The next match between Stewart and Kalitta resulted in creating an all Kalitta Motorsports final round. Stewart fired quicker than Kalitta, but he lost a cylinder and had to pedal his car to the finish line, handing the win to Kalitta.

RT ET MPH
Tony Stewart .047 4.631 180.65
Doug Kalitta .075 3.828 326.79

FINAL ROUND

In an all Kalitta Motorsports match-up, Langdon and Kalitta faced off against each other in an intense battle. Langdon mashed his gas pedal faster than Kalitta, but ended up smoking his tires while Kalitta was perfectly fine. For the third time in the 2024 season, Kalitta earned himself a Wally.

RT 60 FT 330 FT 660 FT MPH AT 660 ET MPH
Doug Kalitta .070 .850 2.150 3.024 290.94 3.752 333.41
Shawn Langdon .065 .840 2.353 4.049 124.20 6.148 101.99

“We’ve definitely all worked very hard and we’re very proud of what Connie [Kalitta]’s put together for us,” said Kalitta about his win, weekend and team. “It was just a great weekend for all of us.”
