The Dual-Threat: Avery Demland’s High-Stakes Balancing Act

In the high-octane world of the IHRA Stock Car Series, the difference between a podium finish and a mid-pack fade is often measured in milliseconds and mental fortitude. For Avery Demland, that fortitude isn’t just honed on the asphalt of the Midwest circuits; it’s forged in the quiet, high-pressure intensity of an Ohio courtroom.

Demland, a fourth-generation racer carrying the torch for OneFive Motorsports, represents the ultimate “dual-threat” in modern sports. By day, she navigates the complexities of the legal system as a practicing attorney. By night and on weekends, she’s a “weekend warrior” in the No. 15 machine, proving that you don’t have to choose just one lane in life to dominate.

The Bloodline and the “Bug”

For Demland, racing wasn’t exactly a choice—it was predestined. With a great-grandfather who raced, a grandfather who worked on cars and horses, and her father, Brian, still serving as her crew chief today, the “racing bug” was in her DNA before she ever turned a wrench.

“As a kid, I didn’t really have a choice,” Demland shared with The Podium Finish. “My dad just kind of put me in a race car and said, ‘Hey, let’s go.’ But the older I got, after I spent some time away from it, it was just an itch. You can’t get away from racing once you start.”

After a hiatus to focus on her education and law career, Demland returned to the cockpit in 2024. The transition from dirt sprint cars as a youth to template late models on asphalt as an adult brought a new perspective—and a new set of stakes.

“It’s a lot different being an adult in a race car,” she admitted. “As a kid, you don’t have fear. Now, there’s so much more in the back of your mind. What if I hit the wall? What if something breaks? You’re focused on the ‘grown-up’ parts of it. Doing 100-lap features… that’ll kick your butt for sure.”

No Feelings at the Racetrack

The heart of OneFive Motorsports is a father-daughter dynamic that defies the old “don’t mix family with business” adage. With her father, Brian, serving as her primary strategist, the bond is built on a foundation of brutal honesty and shared history.

“We always make the joke: you can’t have feelings at the racetrack,” Demland said. “We might yell at each other, but two seconds later, we’re fine. He’s going to tell me the truth, and I’m going to tell him the truth. It just works. It’s strengthened our relationship.”

That thick skin serves her well in her day job, too. Whether dealing with frustrated clients or high-stakes mediation, Demland views her legal career and her racing career as two sides of the same coin. “The attorneys take the brunt of it. I don’t think a lot of people understand that we wear a lot of hats—therapist, mediator, problem solver. I’ve grown some very thick skin over the years.”

The Physical Toll: 140 Degrees and No Power Steering

One of the most defining moments of Demland’s return came during a grueling feature where the mechanical gods were not on her side. In a sport where many assume the driver is “just sitting there,” Demland faced a reality that would break most athletes: 100 laps with no power steering in a cockpit that reached nearly 140 degrees.

“I did pass out, actually, very briefly, just after I got out of the car,” she revealed. “My dad caught me. It was a really long race, a really hot day. You have to muscle these cars around the track. The aggressiveness of these drivers… you have to be able to take hits and not lose control.”

To combat the physical demands, Demland has leaned on the racing community, specifically ARCA Menards Series race winner Greg Van Alst.

“Greg helps me with my hydration regimen. If your body isn’t prepared, you’re not going to make it. We lose at least five pounds of water weight a race just sweating.”

The “Box Combo” Lifestyle

In an era of “clout-chasing” and manufactured personas, Demland stands out because she is unapologetically herself. She isn’t just a driver; she’s a rescuer of four cats, a dog mom to Cooper Dean and the energetic Nemesis Jolene, and a genuine fan of the brands she represents.

When she talks about her post-race go-to, the Raising Cane’s Box Combo, it’s not a scripted pitch. It’s the authentic preference of an Ohio girl who grew up with the brand and values the “One Love” philosophy of hard work and community. For a driver who balances the precision of the law with the grit of the IHRA, the consistency and quality of Cane’s mirror her own approach to her career.

The Village: From Volunteers to Partners

Racing at this level is rarely a “lone wolf” endeavor, and Demland is quick to credit the people who make the No. 15 car possible. From her spotter, Ray, and his wife, Darlene, to her friends, Wayne and Michelle, who drive over an hour several nights a week just to help in the shop, it is a labor of love.

“We are a small team. All volunteer helpers. They do it because they love racing and, I guess, they love me,” she said.

It’s that same loyalty she looks for in partners like Dynamic Drivelines, Aero Wheels, and AFCO.

“We want to partner with people who have the same values. We’re not chasing clout; we’re just drivers who love what we do,” Demland shared.

A Legacy in the Tech Barn

As she prepares for the next round of the IHRA Stock Car Series at Cordell and beyond, Demland remains focused on the bigger picture: being a role model for the kids watching from the grandstands. She recalls a sign in the IHRA tech barn that reminds drivers that there are children watching who want to be just like them.

“I want to show little girls that they can do this, too,” she stated. “My younger self would be stunned to see where we are now—that we’ve busted our butts for this. It’s ours. We bought our own house with a shop attached. We have our own late model.”

Whether she’s filing a high-stakes brief or hitting the apex at the Winchester 400, Avery Demland is proving that the “Fastest Lawyer in Ohio” is just getting started. For the brands and fans following her journey, the message is clear: OneFive Motorsports isn’t just a race team; it’s a testament to what happens when you refuse to hear the word “no.”
