LOS ANGELES — True connectivity is rarely built overnight, but for the surging Dallas Wings, a magical night in the City of Angels proved that their collective vision is ahead of schedule.

Behind a historic playmaking performance from point guard Paige Bueckers and a dominant second-half defensive lockdown, the Wings flew past the Los Angeles Sparks, 104-96, before a raucous crowd at Crypto.com Arena on Friday night.

The victory pushes Dallas to a milestone 7-3 record to start the 2026 campaign. The opening stretch marks the franchise’s best 10-game start since relocating to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, providing tangible validation for an organization playing with immense belief.

For Wings head coach Jose Fernandez, the achievement is a testament to an internal standard that defied external expectations entering the season.

“I don’t think anybody in the league, or probably around the country, thought we’d be 7 and 3 right now,” Fernandez said. “But I can tell you one thing: the locker room did, and I did, and our staff did. It’s a credit. We learned, we continue to learn from wins as much as we learn from those three losses that we had leads in the fourth quarter on what we needed to improve on.”

The primary engine behind Friday’s offensive masterclass was Bueckers. The 24-year-old virtuoso completely dictated the tempo of the contest, dissecting the Los Angeles defense with surgical precision. Bueckers finished the evening with 18 points on an efficient 7-of-14 shooting performance from the field, but her true impact was felt as an elite distributor.

Dishing out a career-high 14 assists against just one turnover, Bueckers tied the Wings’ single-game franchise assist record, an honor previously held exclusively by her backcourt partner, Arike Ogunbowale.

The achievement drew lighthearted banter between the two franchise cornerstones on the post-game podium.

“I smoked her assist on purpose,” Ogunbowale joked, drawing laughs from the press room. “Nah, I’m just kidding. I think that’s dope. Obviously Paige is one-of-one, and I mean, she could’ve got it. We actually had a lot of missed layups from her passes, but yeah, I think she’ll break it at some point soon.”

Bueckers was quick to return the praise, turning the personal milestone back into a reflection of team chemistry.

“It’s funny, in the locker room I was going down the whole entire line of teammates, letting them know that they smoked one for me,” Bueckers smiled. “But I think it was all plan to be able to share that with Arike. My teammates just did a really good job of getting people open, of screening, of cutting, of moving without the ball, and just making the game easy for me, making the read I need to make super easy. And they hit really tough shots too. So, honored. Assist means just giving to your teammates, so that’s really the best accomplishment you can get.”

That unselfish willingness to pass up good shots for great shots resulted in an offensive clinic. Dallas shot a sizzling 53.2% from the field as a team, converting 41 made field goals on 30 total assists.

The baseline connectivity allowed the rest of the starting unit to flourish alongside Bueckers’ distribution. Ogunbowale shook off recent shooting struggles to pour in a game-high 30 points, sinking 10-of-21 field goals and going 5-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Center Jessica Shepard was a relentless force in the painted area, anchoring the frontcourt with a massive double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds on 9-of-13 shooting. Maddy Siegrist added an ultra-efficient 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Azzi Fudd contributed 11 points to ensure all five Dallas starters finished in double figures.

“Paige is such a great decision-maker,” Fernandez noted when assessing his point guard’s record-setting night. “We talk about it in timeouts, three or four things that we want to go to, and she has a good feel on pick-and-roll coverages and in the middle of the floor, in the slot, on the side. Down the stretch, I have total trust in her putting us into the right things to go to.”

Despite the offensive fireworks, securing the victory required navigating immense adversity on the road. The Sparks came out firing in the first half, riding the scoring prowess of superstar guard Kelsey Plum, who routinely broke down the initial line of the Wings’ defense to score downhill.

Compounding matters for Dallas were immediate depth concerns. Veteran guard Odyssey Sims suffered a left ankle injury during the first half and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the contest. Shortly after, rookie guard Aziaha James was forced to head to the locker room with an injury of her own, leaving Fernandez with a severely shortened rotation.

With their depth tested, the Wings leaned into defensive adjustments in the second half. Dallas clamped down when it mattered most, outscoring Los Angeles 27-18 in the decisive fourth quarter to pull away for good.

“Our guys talked in the locker room how consistent and how important was the fourth quarter,” Fernandez said of the final period. “Talking about the fourth quarter being our quarter, and making sure that every trip we wanted to get what we wanted to get done offensively on our end. There were some big plays in that fourth quarter. Big deflections, some big rebounds. Total team effort today with O going down, and Za going down, and your team’s limited with substitutions. But I thought Paige shared the ball really, really well. Aziaha defended. Ball went in for Arike, and Maddy Siegrist had a deflection, another steal, and Jessica Shepard’s consistency as well.”

Shepard echoed her coach’s sentiments, highlighting the impact of the team’s grit down the stretch.

“I think just our aggression,” Shepard explained. “Za had some huge minutes for us there, guarding KP, that I think really kind of helped flip the momentum. So I think just playing team defense and then ending with rebounds at the end of possessions.”

Legendary Stage Inspires Excellence

For Bueckers, the legendary Crypto.com Arena environment continues to bring out her absolute finest basketball. After dropping a memorable 44-point performance in the same building last season, her career-high assist night on Friday confirmed that the bright lights of Los Angeles suit her style perfectly.

“I think it’s just going out there and having fun, playing with passion,” Bueckers said of her affinity for Hollywood. “LA and this arena specifically has so much history in it. It’s a legendary building, and it’s just an honor to play here.

“Dreamed and grew up watching games here. Was a big Kobe fan. So just really enjoy it and try to soak that in, just that I’m living out my dream. But to be able to come here and win with the team that we have, to continue to keep building with what we have and to do it with this team and this unit, and these individuals is special. So, very grateful to be a part of this.”

Turning Focus Toward Crucial Stretch Ahead

The victory marks the fourth road win of the season for Dallas, demonstrating a mature identity that has become a hallmark of their 2026 identity. Fernandez credits an intentional focus on internal development during practice stretches for their ability to withstand hostile road environments.

“We’ve had additional practice time to work on us and be concerned about us, so that’s helped,” Fernandez said. “When you can take one day to just address us and then a practice in a shootaround to talk about the other team. There’s got to be some kind of interior of toughness to go on the road and win games and get through the adversity that we went through today, and to adjust how the game was called as well.”

There will be no time for celebration for the Wings. With a grueling stretch of five games in nine days looming on the horizon, the focus immediately shifts to recovery and tracking the health of their backcourt rotation ahead of a vital road trip to Minnesota.

If Friday night proved anything, however, it is that this Dallas team possesses the chemistry, unselfishness, and collective toughness required to handle whatever challenges lie ahead.
