McLaren Dominates as O’Ward Captures 1st Win of 2026

LEXINGTON, Ohio – What started as a sea of papaya on the front row for the Honda Indy 200 Presented by the 2027 CR-V Hybrid at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course ended in the same fashion on the podium.

The Arrow McLaren duo of Pato O’Ward and Christian Lundgaard dominated Sunday’s event, leading a combined 86 of the 90 scheduled laps in a caution-free race. O’Ward held off his teammate by 0.988 seconds to earn his first victory of the season and the 10th of his INDYCAR career.

“It’s been a year, it’s been a tough one for sure,” said O’Ward. “I think today is just a perfect example of execution. I waited for the perfect time to pounce, and from there we just controlled it.”

In a race that saw high cockpit temperatures push the drivers mentally and physically to their limits, the on-track action remained lukewarm at best, with only 97 total passes, including 82 for position, throughout the 90-lap race. With pit and tire strategies playing little roles in the outcome compared to what fans are accustomed to seeing on road and street courses, drivers instead relied on pure physical endurance and mental discipline to make the moves that ultimately determined the race.

The move of the race came on Lap 42 when Lundgaard’s No. 7 Velo Chevrolet exited Turn 2 wider than O’Ward, giving the Mexican driver the momentum to make an outside move as they raced down the backstretch through the Turn 3 kink. The pair remained side-by-side through Turn 5, with O’Ward finally edging ahead before the two teammates entered Turn 6.

O’Ward struggled to put any significant distance between himself and Lundgaard but later worked his way around Dennis Hauger to begin extending his advantage over the polesitter just before the final round of pit stops. As Lundgaard dove onto pit road, O’Ward stayed out for two additional laps, stretching his lead as much as possible before making his final stop.

While not much of a surprise considering how his teammate has been running this season with two victories and firmly in the championship fight, this win marked O’Ward’s first in nearly a year as the Mexican phenom looks to regroup and make a charge during the second half of the season.

After coming up just short of his third victory of the year, Lundgaard was searching for another statement win to boost his stock heading into 2027. News broke earlier this week that Indianapolis 500 champion Felix Rosenqvist will be leaving Meyer Shank Racing, while six-time series champion Scott Dixon will end his 24-year tenure with Chip Ganassi Racing to fill the two open seats at Arrow McLaren. The move leaves Lundgaard and Nolan Siegel searching for rides next season. On a positive note, Lundgaard left Mid-Ohio having trimmed his deficit to reigning series champion Alex Palou to just 65 points.

“I’m just trying to catch my breath, in all honesty,” said Lundgaard. “That was a very long, very tough race. We were very loose. In these conditions, when you are loose, it makes the car a little heavier to drive. Congrats to the team for a 1-2.”

Kyle Kirkwood drove another solid race in the No. 27 Sam’s Club Andretti Global Honda, finishing third and moving past David Malukas into second in the championship standings. Kirkwood now trails Palou by 56 points, while O’Ward’s victory moves him up to fifth in the standings, 94 points behind the championship leader.

The battle for the 2026 championship is beginning to tighten as the series heads into another off weekend before making the trek to the Volunteer State for the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix Presented by OnlyBulls at Nashville Superspeedway on July 19.
