BROOKLYN — The Connecticut Sun earned a hard-fought 94-86 victory over the New York Liberty at Barclays Center in a preseason showdown that highlighted both the Sun’s depth and their fast-paced offensive style.

Jacy Sheldon led the Sun with 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The second-year guard was a key factor in the Sun’s fast-break offense with her ability to push the ball up the floor and score in transition.

“I think it’s obvious we want to push the pace and play fast, and we’re not satisfied with [Friday night],” Sheldon said. “It’s a step, but we have a lot more work to do, and we’ll get back in the gym and do that. But just to the Sun fans, we’re excited. I think you have a group that’s going to work really hard and work their butts off every night. So I’m excited, excited for the next game.”

Joining Sheldon in the scoring effort was Olivia Nelson-Ododa, who made a strong debut with 15 points and seven rebounds. Her presence in the paint helped Connecticut dominate the boards, finishing the game with a 38-31 rebounding edge. The 6-foot-5 forward’s physicality and hustle were crucial to the Sun’s overall success.

Connecticut’s control of the boards was evident, as they secured a 32-23 rebounding advantage, including 12 offensive rebounds that extended possessions and applied pressure on New York’s defense.

Tina Charles played a pivotal role in the win, contributing 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. The veteran forward’s leadership was essential, particularly in critical moments, as she provided steady scoring and kept the offense flowing when the Liberty threatened to make a comeback.

Marina Mabrey, another key contributor, added 13 points, three assists, and a steal. Mabrey’s ability to score in different ways, both from the perimeter and by attacking the basket, was integral to Connecticut’s offensive balance and their ability to stretch the Liberty’s defense.

On the defensive end, the Sun forced the Liberty into 18 turnovers, converting them into 29 points off turnovers. Their pressure defense disrupted New York’s rhythm, and their ability to control the glass was critical in limiting second-chance opportunities for the Liberty.

Despite the Sun’s defensive pressure, Marine Johannes provided a spark off the bench for the Liberty, leading the team with 12 points, including four three-pointers. Marquesha Davis added 10 points off the bench, demonstrating efficiency and composure in her 19 minutes on the court.

Head coach Rachid Meziane was pleased with the team’s overall effort but acknowledged areas where improvement is still needed. Meziane praised the bench’s effort, acknowledging their growing pains as many made their WNBA debuts.

“There is a big difference between our bench players and our starting five, but it’s normal because many of our bench players are new to the WNBA,” Meziane said. “They played against Seattle, but they’re still a little bit nervous.

“We need to learn from the times we spend on the court. Our last quarter was terrible, but it’s something normal because we had a lot of young players on the team.”

When asked about Sheldon’s performance, Meziane was quick to highlight her speed and shooting.

“She brings a lot of speed, a lot of enthusiasm,” he said. “She shot the ball very well today. It’s a good thing because it’s something we need. If she can bring us this energy and shooting, it will be very helpful for our team.”

Despite some struggles from the bench, the Sun’s starters were able to maintain their lead, and their collective effort on both ends of the floor secured the win. Connecticut’s depth and balanced scoring attack, with contributions from players like Sheldon, Charles and Mabrey, were crucial in holding off the Liberty’s late-game push.

The victory served as a confidence booster for the Sun as they prepare for their season opener next Sunday in Washington. As the team continues to develop chemistry and build on their fast-paced style, their depth will be a key asset throughout the regular season.

“We’re still growing, but I think you saw a glimpse of what this team can do,” Sheldon added. “I’m really excited about the direction we’re heading.”

The Next Sunrise

With final roster decisions looming, the Sun now turn their focus to the season opener in Mohegan Sun Arena on May 18 against the Washington Mystics at 1 p.m. ET. In 82 head-to-head matches, the Sun have the edge over the Mystics, 51-31.
